Congratulations! You have finally received the long awaited acceptance letter from one of the many galleries you submitted an exhibition proposal to. This is exciting news because, as we all know in the art world, the more exposure—the better. But may we offer a word of advice: Before you commit to this opportunity, make sure the gallery is a “good fit” for you and your artwork.
It is beneficial to assess every gallery opportunity to assure you it will be a positive and successful endeavor. By critically evaluating the gallery’s mission, clientele, and overall program, you will determine if it meets your expectations, while avoiding an ineffective career move.
We have taken the guess work out of choosing the right gallery by putting together this quick and easy assessment. Simply ask yourself these 5 questions:
1. Do you and the gallery share similar values and goals?
2. Is the gallery open to listening to your needs and concerns?
3. Does the gallery have a solid marketing program to promote your art?
4. If needed, are they willing to negotiate conditions within your contract?
5. Do you have a positive connection with the gallery staff?
Remember, only you are responsible for the success of your art career; so choose the gallery you want to work with wisely, and your next exhibit will be a success.
